Chen to Mayor Hau: Just you arrest me

PERMIT PAINS: The DPP is accusing the Taipei mayor of double standards over the city's refusal to grant it a permit for its torch relay while allowing the KMT to go ahead
By Mo Yan-chih

President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) yesterday dared the Taipei mayor to arrest him over his government's plan to hold a torch relay to promote its UN membership bid, which the city administration insists is illegal.

"The torch relay from Oct. 24 to Nov. 3 is absolutely legal and I will be the first to carry the torch," Chen said. "If the Taipei City Government thinks the event is illegal, it can go ahead and arrest me."

His comment came after Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌), a Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) member, said the organizer of the event had not applied for use of the roads and traffic control by the city administration and that as such the gathering would be considered illegal.

The Sports Affairs Council, the organizer of the event, has sent a letter to the city government informing it of the torch relay. In the letter, it also invited Hau to participate in the event.

The event is scheduled to start on Ketagalan Boulevard in front of the Presidential Office on Wednesday, to coincide with UN Day, in commemoration of the entry into force of the UN Charter on that date in 1945.

The relay is scheduled to end at the same location on Nov. 3, after the torch has passed through 25 cities and counties.

The city government has criticized the council for failing to apply for permits for the event, saying the relay would be in violation of the Regulations Governing Road Traffic Safety (道路安全處罰條例) and the Parade and Assembly Law (集會遊行法).

The city government has pledged to clamp down on the event.

Hau said that rather than being a sports event, the torch relay was a political rally aimed at promoting Chen's UN membership bid.

Chen criticized Hau yesterday for what he said represented double standards.

He lashed out at Hau for allowing KMT presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) to hold a bicycle relay to promote his presidential campaign.

Chen vowed to stage the event and urged all citizens to join him.

At a separate setting yesterday, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Taipei City caucus slammed Hau for allowing the KMT's cycling event promoting its UN referendum bid also to be held on Wednesday.

The KMT's Taipei branch failed to apply for a permit before the deadline, but the city government granted it an extension so that it could complete the procedure, the caucus said.

"Hau insists on enforcing the law on the government's sports event, but indulged the KMT in holding the activity illegally," DPP Taipei City Councilor Lee Chien-chang (李建昌) told a press conference yesterday at the city council.

"He owes Taipei residents an apology," Lee said.

While the city government claims the KMT has followed proper procedures to obtain its permit, the DPP caucus said the KMT had failed to complete its application by Tuesday, as required by regulations. The DPP requested that Hau make the application public.

"The KMT violated regulations by failing to meet the deadline, but the city government has defended the event nonetheless," DPP Taipei City Councilor Liu Yao-ren (劉耀仁) said.

Citing Taipei City assembly regulations, Lee and Liu said the KMT organizers should have applied for a permit with the city's New Construction Office at least eight days prior to the event.

Showing a copy of a document obtained from the office, the DPP said the KMT had not submitted all the paperwork until Wednesday.

In addition, the organizers should have made a NT$30,000 deposit for holding the event by Oct. 12, but failed to do so until Tuesday, Liu and Lee said.

In response, KMT Taipei branch chief Pan Chia-sen (潘家森) said that the branch had followed legal procedures in filing its application and that the city government had already approved the event.

Commenting on the matter, Cabinet spokesman Shieh Jhy-wey (謝志偉) said yesterday that Hau's intransigence on the torch relay revealed his "pettiness and lack of vision."

Shieh reminded Hau that most cities and counties governed by the DPP had not required that Ma apply for prior approval when he embarked on a round-the-nation bicycle tour in May to drum up support for his electoral campaign.

"Most of the DPP-controlled local governments regarded Ma's cycling tour as a sports event and exempted him from the permit requirement," Shieh said.

He said that the governments had even provided assistance with traffic control along the roads that the KMT presidential candidate had ridden on.

Comparing the manner in which those cities treated Ma with the Taipei City Government's refusal to offer assistance with traffic control on the grounds that the torch relay was illegal really shows "who is being petty," Shieh said.

Day 4, Dr CSJ @ Istana Protest Park for Burma

We are also watching the matas, today they removed the 2 white plastic chairs. I think that looked to obvious from the pedestrians' walk, they changed both chairs to black so that it does not stand out that much. famiLEE LEEgime mata Camouflage? :-)

They have some time 2 video cameras on tripods, some times just one. 24Hr a day for the 4th day now.

Today more foreign visitors from the IBA delegates are meeting with Dr. CSJ, and not just at the Istana Protest park, Dr CSJ had breakfast & dinner meetings with his visitors just near by the Istana.

The international community is getting not just very well informed about the protests for Burma in Singapore, and what the famiLEE LEEgime are doing in oppressions, such as video surveillance as well as the arrests made. The foreign delegate took a good look and filmed outside the Istana, especially about the mata setting up 2 video camera tripods to surveillance JUST ONE Dr CSJ protesting for Burma! Human Rights and leaders of legal professionals from many nations had documented and witnessed it in person and on video.

The famiLEE LEEgime's First World Jokes and their police state activities linked closely with their Myanmar Junta friends are becoming very clear. They are not able to run away from this now. :-)

Day 3: Dr CSJ @ Istana Protest Park for Burma

Day 3 17.Oct.2007, I arrived at Istana Park about 1400hr. This is the 3rd days after Dr. CSJ camped on Istana Protest Park. Under the hot sun I saw Dr CSJ sitting under his blue umbrella, reading his book next to the "No Arms No Deal with Burma" Placard. Tourists and Singaporeans are taking pictures of him from the Istana side.

The same 2 mata video cameras rolling 24 hrs with 2 matas manning them, seated in the same plastic chairs under the Istana's green fabric shelters.

I brought my WuShu sword to Istana Park and did my exercises while talking to Dr. CSJ. An hour in to that, Miss CSC, Mr M Ravi Mr John Tan arrived with an Australian who is president of some Human Rights NGO, he came here to conduct a video interview with Dr. CSJ. (The blue T shirt blue cap person).

I conceived the idea of using the pavilion of the park for a group hunger-strike, that is a perfect place. :-) Media have access, there is shelter and it is opposite the Istana gate. Moreover GIC Temasek is just at building above the MRT. Transportation is easy, MRT's tunnel has an exit at the Park. If famiLEE LEEgime want to disperse we just refuse to move, ask them to arrest. If they arrest we continue hunger-strike in mata-chu, refuse to post bail, refuse to be release, force them to throw us out of mata-chu.

The activism strategy have to be like molten metal, red hot and sticky, bait them to touch, when they touch, molten metal will burn their hand and most importantly STICK to their skin and continue to burn and impossible to remove without a very significant damage. They don't take the bait, you have to step up action and make it impossible for them to tolerate further.

Oh! You know what?

The swines in Istana were surely feasting tonight!

Bus loads of them arrived at evening and many cars through Istana Gate. Left at night.

NEW UPDATED videos & PHotos of Day 3 (night time)

During the 3rd night, I saw the matas added another 3rd chair to man their video camera, this time a black folding chair, which is in addition to the 2 white plastic chairs. :-)

After 3 days 3 nights, in shine and rain the placard's cardboard backing is soggy and soft, even though there is a plastic cover over it. Dr CSJ had to do some emergency fixing by adding a backing cardboard on the 3rd night. Just to keep the placard standing upright. The following footage are the fixing of placard and returning to the seat at road side opposite the Istana Gate.

Day 2 @ Istana Protest Park

I have no idea when is LKy the old dog thief going to come over from Istana to officiate the opening of my proposed Istana Protest Park, but if he don't I am going to do it on his behalf. :-)

This is a peace protest at Washington DC's National Mall opposite White House, everyone knows that is the traditional designated protest ground. Notice that there are fountain ponds at both OUR Istana Park & the DC National Mall as seen in the 2 pictures. :-)

I arrived at OUR Istana Protest Park today about 1500hr just before it began to have another heavy rain. As I walked out of tunnel I saw Dr. CSJ in the process of shifting into the large pavilion of the park to take shelter for the rain, he was sitting in raincoat directly in front of Istana Gate yesterday Day 1. Dr CSJ is a little tired, he didn't get much sleep as supportive visitor had kept coming to visit him.

There is a minor modification to the Protest placard, changing the wordings from "the Junta" to "Burma". This change was done this morning because it is believed that some people don't understand what is "the Junta" when reading that protest placard, Dr CSJ thinks that word "Burma" would help.

This afternoon there was a larger version of mata van parked at the gate of Istana with hazard light turned on, I saw it when I just arrived, but after talking to CSJ for a while that mata van disappear.

The matas decreased their surveillance cameras from 2 to 1 yesterday evening, and I found they increased back to 2 cameras today. I didn't observe any mata coming anywhere within 50 meters of Dr. Chee's location in pavilion. I must say that famiLEE LEEgime provided protesters with good shelters and even Washington DC don't have this! :-)

Matas were hiding under shelters behind the machine gun armed Gurkha at Istana gate across the road. They had not harassed any activists since yesterday. The famiLEE LEEgime also improved the welfare of matas today, that 2 white plastic chairs were provided for the matas manning the 2 video cameras! Wong Kan Seng don't want his Home Team men to go on Medical Leave? :-)

When it was about 2100hr, in lighter rain I ran across the road to the closed Istana Gate to take this picture above of the 2 matas & their 2 tripods and video cameras. Notice I shot them before they could stand up from their white plastic chair to greet me! :-) Fortunately I wasn't using a gun.

This afternoon I met up with 3 IBA delegates from Zimbabwe, at the pavilion with Dr CSJ & other local activists, we had a very interesting comparison between LKy famiLEE LEEgime & notorious Mugabe regime of Zimbabwe. Fascinating similarities and differences.

I discussed my concept of mutual judiciary watch with the President & Deputy of Zimbabwe Law Society, and they responded with interest. I also offered to help them with Internet skills. Under oppressive Mugabe regime these lawyers were framed sued and beaten in prison, but their court acquitted them some times unlike our political cases here. Their regime is another junta similarly using the same set of filthy abusive oppressions as famiLEE LEEgime, but Mugabe's version is the rough one and old dog thief LKy's is the refined version, they are both based on the same corrupted selfish greedy coward principles.

Similar with us, the Zimbabwe leaders of law society are very concern about Burma. And they had also been making comparison between the Burma situation against their own, and are very amazed with the similarities found. We understand now that people from different oppressed countries can mutually assist each other and do cross learnings. :-)

Civil Campaign: Singapore Judiciary Watch

Activists had recent setup this Campaign Website for Singapore Judiciary Watch.

This is an idea I had discussed with many people since last year. I actually proposed that legal professionals such as human rights lawyers can help developing countries of Asia to act as providers of ONLINE legal cases clinics, and this effort can be mutually cross helping campaign among Asian countries. For example, Singaporeans help watching Malaysia vise versa. Expanding further and further as time goes by. Professional analysis and comments from the point of justice will help, besides exposure of facts in the cases.

Anyway it is a good start here in Singapore aligned with IBA events. There are out-reach materials in PDF form currently published online at the Singapore Judiciary Watch website. If you are in any position to assist the out reach, please render your help to pass them to international law professionals & IBA persons.

If you have any concept or suggestions or can contribute in any way please write to:
webmaster@singaporejw.org
If you know any cases of grief injustice, I hope that website will help to publicize. If you are capable of improving that site, please also email to the webmaster. If you are from another country and are doing a similar campaign, I suggest you join hands with Singapore Judiciary Watch. Together we can come up with something mutually fruitful.

:-)

Dr CSJ's Istana Burma Protest going round the clock

Activists & friends & Dr. Chee's children visited him at Istana Park tonight to support his long solo protest directly opposite the Istana's gate. Food & drinks as well as clothes were delivered to Dr. Chee.

"No Arms No Deal with the Junta" Placard is now placed on a tripod.

The protest is going around the clock and is expected to be several days. Friends and supporters will be visiting him day & night, bringing him food & drinks as well as reading materials.

Even as I am posting now at 1am, there are supporters there visiting Dr. Chee at Istana Park.

Singapore Istana PROTEST Park Proposed :-)

Today at the Istana Park we saw famiLEE's official motorcades & those carrying the guests attending IBA event, including US Embassy's motorcade. Entering and leaving Istana.

I think the Istana Park is a very First World location for an officially designated Protest Park which will serve this different function from the Hong Lim Speakers' Cornered. :-) So this is my proposal for the famiLEE LEEgime to implement. If you are so First World, lets have our Istana PROTEST Park! Why not? They have it in Washington DC a designated National Mall for Protest on the Capital Hill.

Looking for so called Constructive Proposals? OK! Here is one OUR First World!
:-)

famiLEE LEEgime matas arrested activists claiming that "Istana Park is a gazetted area prohibiting 2 or more persons gathering" which is obviously not applied equally and fairly to every users of the park. Which is obviously arbitrary and selective. Because there are many couples (of 2 people) I saw tonight hugging and kissing there, as well as groups of youths dancing at the park, as well as people dining at cafe in the park. Why aren't protesters treated equally as well as fairly under the same law & constitution in this First World Singapore? :-Z

Rain or Shine or Police Threats Dr CSJ persist Protest for Burma

Starting from noon Monday 15.Oct.2007 Dr. Chee Soon Juan is protesting opposite Istana at the Istana Park where 5 SDP leaders were arrested last week. The previously arrested and released SDP leaders were at the scene when Dr. Chee began his solo protest today. I arrived with them at noon today at the Istana gate.

Except for the "Suu Kyi" poster still retained by mata, all the same placards slogan as last week's protest were put together for Dr. Chee in one single board. The words in bold red says "No Arms No Deal with the Junta".

After handing protest documents and reading the letter to Ass Loong Son's representative at Istana gate, Dr. Chee crossed the road to begin his protest. He started in standing position. The famiLEE LEEgime sent 2 teams of plain clothes matas to film us. DSP Deep Singh was again caught hiding behind bushes of Istana Park, he ran away when we approached him with camera. Another Chinese senior officer in plain clothes were at the scene commanding his matas.

1315hr Dr Chee changed to a sitting protest position after foreign media interviewing him. At about 1545hr, the sky got dark and heavy thunder storm began. Dr. CSJ 1st began to use umbrella and then changed to rain coat as thunderstorm got heavier.

At about 1500hr Group of about 8 including uniformed task force police came to serve Dr. Chee a warning, as the rain turned lighter.
